Magnesium

I'm on day 2 of my BioSignature certification in Rhode Island. I am learning so much and feel much more equipped to coach my clients towards their goals, specifically involving nutrition and supplementation. Over the next few weeks, I will be discussing on my blog a base line supplement protocol that I recommend for everyone. Today is magnesium.

Last night I got to try a new magnesium product by Charles Poliquin, Zen Mag Liquid Px, that just hit the market today. It was pretty cool trying a product before the public could purchase it today. The product is designed to help replenish magnesium stores and improve sleep. My result-- I slept like a baby in my hotel room last night.

Zen Mag Px features the unique, patented chelated mineral Magtein™ which is a magnesium chelated to threonic acid (magnesium L-threonate). It is considered superior to other forms of magnesium at penetrating the blood brain barrier. Magnesium deficiency is associated with many neurological health issues such as anxiety disorders and memory loss. Zen Mag Px can support:
  • Recall
  • Relaxation
  • Sleep
  • Cognition
  • Age-related memory decline
  • PTSD
  • Anxiety
  • Phobias
  • Depression
  • Anti-aging
If you're not taking magnesium, you should be. Most Americans are extremely deficient. All hormones are affected by optimal levels of magnesium. If you want to boost testosterone levels, improve muscle mass gains, prevent osteoporosis, manage cortisol levels, and improve body composition, then this supplement is a must in your daily regime. Women need a minimum of 1200mg and up to 2400mg; men need 2000mg-4000mg. Go on the higher dosage end if you workout. To restore magnesium levels, you should use multiple forms of magnesium to prevent loose stools. The best way to test magnesium levels is have your doctor run a red blood cell magnesium test-- 6.8mg/dL is optimal and 4.2mg/dL is the lowest value.

Texas Longhorn Beef

I have been making weekly trips to the Barton Creek Farmers Market for about a month. One of my favorite places to get my beef for the week is Wright Longhorn Beef. Grass-fed Longhorn Beef is high in omega-3’s, has less fat than chicken or turkey, and is packed with flavor. Longhorn cattle are also much easier on the fragile and dry ecosystem of Central TX, because they browse (eat shrubs) as well as graze (eat grass). The cattle have no added hormones or unnecessary antibiotics, and are never exposed to the stresses of the feed lots that mass market beef cattle endure.

I specifically asked Mr. Wright about his longhorns and was pleased to hear they are 100% grass-fed from start to finish, and he even invited me to visit his farm. Some farmers feed cattle grass for only part of the duration and then stuff the cow full of grains but still claim it is "grass-fed." The key here is to be an informed consumer and ask questions.  Plus, by buying Longhorn, you’re helping to keep the symbol of Texas a viable breed.

I buy the ground beef and sausage each week and it's delish! If you aren't shopping at a Farmers Market, then start now. By doing a quick google search, you will be amazed at what you can find in your area.

Fashlete of the Month

I am honored to be Fashletics Fashlete of the Month. When Sarah reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in an interview, I was thrilled. Fashletics is a collection of handmade jewelry inspired by a passion for fitness.  Each piece of jewelry serves a badge of honor and an expression of strength. The brand’s mantra, LIVE LOVE LIFT™, has inspired a collection of apparel.  LIVE LOVE LIFT is more than a tagline, it is a way of life and a state of mind.  In addition to creating unique jewelry and clothing items, their goal is to empower and inspire people to live a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Excerpt from the interview--
As our Fashlete of the Month, Megan is receiving this customized sterling silver necklace from Fashletics engraved with the word of her choice. She chose the word BALANCE because it encompasses every bit of who she is-- work hard, play hard.  Megan values balance in her life, making sure that she never becomes too extreme with one thing in particular.  This balance ensures that she will not miss out on any of life's incredible opportunities.

This attitude is exactly what makes Megan a perfect Fashlete - she understands the connection between physical fitness and real life.  She has become a leader in a community that is committed to encouraging positive change inside and outside the gym walls.
